Question for Car Insurance Sales People?
I have legal guardianship of a niece, she just turned 17 and got her drivers license as to not lapse after drivers ed. My insurance company says she HAS to be covered . SHE WILL NOT BE DRIVING ANY OF OUR CARS AND DOES NOT HAVE ONE OF HER OWN. Ins. co. says this is standard practice. Why does she have to be covered if she does not have a car? They say because she has a D. L. and has “Access” to a car she needs to be covered. I have a penis but does not mean I will rape someone? Why do I have to pay for her when she will not be driving?

thats what happens to everybody when a licensed driver is in your custody/natural/adopted/legal guardian or permanent resident/welcome to the new drivers world/they expect the kid to drive your car/good luck with your penis theory//
Of course she doesn’t need insurance if she’s not driving a car.
In fact, to quote for an insurance premium the insurance company will need details of the car that she will be driving and its age, value, engine size etc…how are you going to provide this information if she isn’t driving a car?
Your only alternative would be to exclude her from your policy, and many companies won’t do this due to the potential problems is she ever DOES drive one. You’re legally responsible for her actions as guardian, and as your insurer, your company is legally responsible, too.
All insurance companies do this. All licensed drivers living in your household must be listed as operators on your policy, or specifically excluded from coverage. They do this so that they can accurately assess their risk of paying out on claims.
If you can, have her listed on the policy as ‘excluded’. She will never be able to drive your vehicles, and if she does, no coverage will be afforded for any loss that she has.
Change insurers, not all of them will force you to cover all members of your household
Change insurer. Not all do require this.
Have you tried these comparison sites?
